Applying psychology to promote school improvement

Supporting Schools

Psychological theory and evidence-based practice can be applied at a whole-school / setting level to promote organisational change. Do you have targets in your School Development Plan, but are not sure how to achieve them, or how to bring your staff with you on the journey of organisational change?  Do you need to develop effective processes to ensure early identification and systematic meetings of additional needs? Would you like to introduce new whole-school practices, but be sure they translate into meaningful and lasting change?

Educational psychology can be applied in many ways, including to achieve organisational change; supporting schools to develop effective systems and build capacity to address organisational developmental targets. Our Educational Psychologist has a strong interest in organisational psychology and has delivered Research and Development projects in schools across Lancashire and beyond.

R&D Projects

Research and Development projects are collaborative and bespoke, underpinned by an understanding of organisational culture and the individual differences found in similar settings. Organisational psychology tells us that change occurs when the people who create the culture and work within it are active partners in implementing the change. We use an evidenced-based framework – RADIO – to ensure these factors are central to planning and implementation of new ways of working.

Examples of Research and Development projects include:

  • Sandwell Wellbeing Charter Mark: Developing a whole school approach to supporting the well-being of students and staff
  • Gathering children’s voice to inform school planning
  • Evaluating the impact of various speech and language interventions to support the development of whole school speech and language provision
  • Understanding the needs of students with high functioning autism in a mainstream setting to develop effective and supportive educative practices
  • Developing whole school behaviour management policy through the implementation of Restorative Approaches
  • Changing from a ‘behaviour policy’ to a ‘relationships policy’, through the implementation of Restorative Approaches and the development of effective systems to identify and address social, emotional and mental health needs.
